Artist Statement
My work begins in the high-gloss world of fashion photography, magazines, and digital media—spaces defined by elegance, glamour, and idealised beauty. Yet, in an era flooded with endless visual information, these polished images often become generic, losing their luster. I use them not to copy reality, but as a gateway into an imagined narrative, deliberately deconstructing and rebuilding them to bring them back to life.

By dismantling these pristine references, I strip away photographic realism in favor of graphic abstraction, bold color, and expressive form. In my studio, I live alongside these portraits as they evolve—propping them on chairs, hanging them on walls, sitting with them for hours until their new identities emerge. They become imagined characters with quiet inner lives, distinct from the found photos that inspired them.

At its core, this practice is an exploration of identity and belonging. Growing up with a persistent feeling of standing on the outside looking in, I use paint to question the cultural ideals served to us: What is beauty? Who is the subject? Who decides? Through intuitive color choices, deliberate distortions, and playful text, I rebel against standard representations to create something uniquely my own. Through this process of deconstruction, these figures are reborn as distinct characters with imaginary lives—which is why I give each her own title. Meet Dame.
